Menopause - Dr Sue Loughlin

Dr Sue Loughlin's menopause clinic is available to enrolled and non-enrolled patients.

I am a working GP partner with a special interest in Menopause.

I have a diploma in Obstetrics & Gynaecology and am a member of the Australasian Menopause Society, frequently attending their conferences.  I have been running menopause clinics for 8 years.

I am passionate about providing good evidence based guidance.

After the "Million Women Study 2000" many GPs stopped prescribing HRT and have never restarted.

HRT is safe with many benefits for the right women.  It is important to evaluate these risks first so an informed decision can be made.

I can recommend checking out Dr Louise Newson's (a UK GP) website . As well as good evidence based facts and dispelling some myths, there is a good section on how to live well throughout menopause, without medication, using lifestyle changes, which is well worth trying.

The study did show an increased risk of heart disease and stroke.  However, subsequent research has proven these cases were older women with pre-existing risk factors for heart disease.

At your first appointment you will discuss up to date evidence along with the risks and benefits of HRT and alternative options to decide most suitable and effective treatment.  Examination will include breast check, gynecological examination if needed, and cardiovascular risk assessment (including blood tests if not already done).

If HRT is deemed suitable a discussion on all of the available types, oral vs. patches or creams, the progesterones and which ones, and contraceptive cover if needed.
